If you run a business, process invoices, or track expenses, you likely run into this problem on a daily basis: You have the final receipt total, but you need to know exactly how much of that total was the actual price of the good, and how much was the Goods and Services Tax (GST).
You cannot simply multiply the final price by the tax rate—that will give you the wrong number! You have to do a "Reverse GST" calculation.
You can use the engine below to instantly separate the base price and the tax amount from any final total, or scroll down to learn the exact mathematical formula to do it yourself.
The Interactive Reverse GST Calculator
To use this engine for reverse calculation, look at the "Action" dropdown and select "Remove GST". Enter your final receipt total as the Amount, and enter the GST rate. The engine will instantly extract the base price.
The Reverse GST Formula
A very common mistake people make is trying to extract a 10% tax from a $110 total by simply taking 10% of $110 (which is $11) and subtracting it. That gives you $99, which is incorrect!
Because the tax was originally added to the base price, you have to use division to reverse the math.
Here is the exact formula to extract the Base Price:
Base Price = Total Price / [1 + (GST Rate / 100)]
Once you have the Base Price, finding the exact amount of tax you paid is simple subtraction:
Tax Amount = Total Price - Base Price
Example: Extracting 18% GST in India
Let's say you bought a piece of software for your business, and the final invoice says ₹5,900. The invoice states this price is inclusive of 18% GST, but you need to record the base price and the tax amount separately in your accounting software.
- Convert the GST rate to a decimal: 18 / 100 = 0.18
- Add 1 to the decimal: 1 + 0.18 = 1.18
- Divide the Total Price by this number: ₹5,900 / 1.18 = ₹5,000 (Base Price)
- Find the Tax Amount: ₹5,900 - ₹5,000 = ₹900 (GST Amount)
So, out of your ₹5,900 purchase, the software actually cost ₹5,000, and you paid ₹900 to the government in GST.
Creating a Reverse GST Formula in Excel
If you are processing a spreadsheet full of inclusive prices, you can automate this extraction.
Assuming your Total Price is in column A, and your GST Rate (as a percentage, e.g., 18%) is in column B:
- To find the Base Price (Column C): Use the formula
=A2 / (1 + B2) - To find the Tax Amount (Column D): Use the formula
=A2 - C2
By mastering the reverse calculation, you will never struggle with inclusive invoices again!
